Message from the Executive Director/CEO

A Few Words About Us

From Mike Schiks*, Executive Director/CEO of Project Turnabout

Dear Readers,

A number of years ago, I was asked a question that has stayed with me. A mother of a prospective patient called and asked to speak to the Director. Upon being transferred to me, she explained her situation. She spoke of how much she loved her son. She missed the person she knew was underneath all of the behavior associated with his drug and alcohol problem.

During the call she asked a number of questions about our treatment services and then paused, took a breath and asked the following question: “Would you send a member of your family to your program if they needed it?” This question stayed with me over the years, particularly in my role at Project Turnabout.

Our Web Page is designed to tell you about a number of facets of Project Turnabout:
• As an organization we are a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit agency. What this means is that all our funds are dedicated to helping others. No profits are diverted or taken from our operations.
• Project Turnabout is a professional organization that integrates professional staff from a number of specialties including: counseling, medical, psychological, family, spiritual and recreational/activities towards a life of recovery.
• Project Turnabout uses the principles of 12-Step self help groups to ensure those who receive our services have access to, and can make use of, a lifetime of continued and affordable support for their recovery.
• Our agency is a licensed Minnesota Department of Human Services and Minnesota Health Department treatment provider.
• We aspire to match the level of services to the individual and family through our full continuum of services from Prevention to Inpatient/Residential to Outpatient and to Continuing Care.

Most of all, Project Turnabout is an organization that aspires to live up to the question the woman asked me all those years ago; a program that lives up to the expectations of those patients, families and professionals who reach out for help, the type of program that we would send a family member to. Yes, I would send/recommend a family member in need of help to Project Turnabout and here is why…

Compassionate Hearts
A treatment center is only as good as its staff. We work very hard to ensure that Project Turnabout staff possesses the spirit, understanding and commitment needed to work with those individuals and families who come to us. This is a consistent message among staff. We understand that beneath the pain, heartache, and/or frustration associated with addiction, each patient who comes to us has value. We whole heartedly believe that each person is worth the chance for recovery from addiction. We value the reality that each person has loved ones who, despite the dynamics of addictive behavior, care deeply about them. We understand that our role is to help the individual free themselves of the trappings and behavior of addiction.

Professional Services
Once again, our services are only as good as the staff delivering them. Project Turnabout staff are appropriately licensed/accredited for the services they deliver. Besides meeting our license standards of care, in many cases, staff exceeds the required credentials. Our patient to counselor ratio surpasses Minnesota state licensure requirements.  We measure satisfaction and outcomes of each of our services, to ensure continuous improvement, innovation and quality.

Project Turnabout’s team works together to maintain an organizational environment that fosters a patient centered culture of continuous learning and improvement. Our business practices are designed first and foremost to support the mission and values of our organization.

Respectful Environment
Project Turnabout staff take pride in serving all individuals regardless of age, gender, income, culture, ethnicity, education, and other demographics. We also take great pride in our facilities. To us, they communicate the high regard we have for those individuals and families who make use of our services. Our Intensive/Residential facilities were designed for their purpose. They are modern and well kept with an ongoing crew of maintenance and housekeeping staff.

We work diligently to be accessible and affordable to those who need our services. We do this not by cutting back on clinical services, but rather being attentive to administrative overhead. Once again, this reflects our commitment to our mission to help others.

Beyond that, all of our staff have been oriented and are continually reminded of the importance of their role, whatever it is, in fostering a respectful environment for all. We do our very best to ensure that people are treated with dignity and respect.

In Summary
I have come to know Project Turnabout as a special place with a talented team and a special spirit. We aspire to be the place you can feel comfortable in sending a family member, friend, patient or client.  Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have.

Sincerely,

Mike Schiks, MS, ACATA
