PRESENTING

Rick Moldenhauer, MS, LADC, ICADC, LPC, a Treatment Services Consultant at the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division, DHS. Rick has more than 25 years of direct care experience in a wealth of settings involving chemical dependency treatment. He is on a variety of State and Federal initiatives involving best practices and committees for various purposes. He is an author, frequent speaker and technical assistant in quality delivery of chemical dependency services.

Jay Jaffee, the Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Prevention Coordinator at the Minnesota Department of Health. He has worked in the substance abuse field for 34 years, 17 at the Health Department. Prior to working for the state he worked in schools and communities as well as at a treatment center.

Compulsive Gambling: Similarities and Differences to Chemical Dependency

Objectives:
• To provide participants with the tools to identify and treat the compulsive gambler.
• To promote understanding of similarities and differences of compulsive gambling and chemical dependency.
• To educate participants regarding best practices for serving men & women affected by compulsive gambling.

Target Audience:  Mental Health, Family/Human Services, Social Workers, Assessors, Clergy, Prevention, and Other Interested Persons.

Presenters:
DON FEENEY - Don Feeney has been the Research and Planning Director at the MN State Lottery since 1991. He is responsible for the lottery’s corporate social responsibility programs, strategic planning, market analysis, and legislative relations. Before joining the Lottery, he worked with the Environmental Quality Board, the State Demographer’s Office, the MN State Planning Agency, and as a policy advisor to former Governor Rudy Perpich. Don is currently serving his fourth term on the board of the National Council on Problem Gambling. He also serves on the board of the Northstar Problem Gambling Alliance and the MN Problem Gambling Advisory Committee. He holds a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard, a master’s degree in statistics from the University of Minnesota, and a B.S. degree in applied mathematics from Brown University.

ROGER SVENDSEN, MS, CPPR - Roger currently serves as Training Manager for the Northstar Problem Gambling Alliance. He is a former Community Faculty member at Metro State University and Century College, the former Executive Director of the Northstar Problem Gambling Alliance and the former Training and Program Development Director for the Minnesota Institute of Public Health where he served as Director of the Minnesota Problem Gambling Helpline, Associate Director of the Interfaith Center for Health Issues and Director of the Minnesota Prevention Resource Center. He has authored many publications in the areas of substance abuse prevention and problem gambling.

SANDI BRUSTUEN, NCGC II, LADC - Sandra Brustuen is a nationally Certified Gambling Counselor II and Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor. She is the Coordinator of Project Turnabout’s Vanguard Compulsive Gambling Program. She has 30 years experience in the addictions field, working with compulsive gamblers exclusively since 1992. Sandi was instrumental in developing the Professional in Residence Program, which has provided professionals, nationally and internationally, with knowledge of treatment for compulsive gamblers.

MIKE SCHIKS, MS, ACATA - Mike Schiks has worked in the substance abuse field for over 30 years. For the last 5 years he has served as the Executive Director/CEO of Project Turnabout Addiction Recovery Center. Prior to coming to Project Turnabout, he rose from counselor to Executive Vice President over all of Hazelden Treatment Services. Mike left Hazelden in 2005 and started a consulting firm, Minnesota Model Consulting Inc., to assist addiction treatment programs nationwide. His blend of personal experience with addiction, education, and the real work experience gives him a unique perspective in the field of addiction.
