Project Turnabout believes that providing education to families/significant others and having the opportunity to communicate in a supportive environment is an integral part of the recovery process and helps the entire family begin the road to recovery. Our family education days offer assistance to both the patients and their family members by building self-esteem and opening communication. Family members have the opportunity to spend time with patients while they are abstinent, possibly for the first time in months or years. Patients and family members learn to talk to each other in an honest and open way regarding addictive behaviors and recovery.
Our family education days provide valuable education on alcohol, drug, and compulsive gambling addictions, emotional support, as well as interactions with other families who are experiencing the same or similar issues. All sessions are facilitated by our Family Counselor (Licensed Professional Counselor) or a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor from the program which is scheduled to participate. The Family Program is offered on a bi-weekly schedule. This opportunity is offered free of charge to everyone choosing to participate.
Family members who attend Family Day programming are asked to be here by 9:00am, so they can attend the morning patient educational lecture. Following a short break, family members attend an educational and group process session with our Family Counselor or another member of our clinical staff. A variety of subjects may be discussed including the disease concept of addiction, principles of Twelve Step recovery, effects of addiction on the family dynamics, enabling or co-dependence, communication skills, and family recovery. Families are also given the opportunity to see that they are not alone and can network with other families to develop a support system and break the isolation that is common when addiction is present in a family. The afternoon is spent in a facilitated group session, in which each family unit processes issues around their loved one’s addiction with each other and staff. All patients from the respective unit are in attendance in the afternoon, as this session provides a valuable demonstration of communication skills they can utilize as they enter recovery.
In the event you cannot attend the family education day, conference calls may be set up through either the patient’s unit counselor or the family counselor.
